The C&L "Racer" intake assembly is a NO COMPROMISES air intake assembly that is designed for MAXIMUM airflow. It is ideal for those who are looking to generate the most possible horsepower in both naturally aspirated and Saleen Supercharged (with appropriate tuning) applications. This unit flows a full 1,070 CFM (see chart), which is approximately 7% greater than our "Street" kit and has 95% (nearly double) the flow of the factory air intake assembly. This additional airflow has shown some benefit over our "Street" intake on heavily modified vehicles equipped with cam swaps and/or ported cylinder heads. Performance of this intake on your typical stock or mildly modified vehicle is basically the same as our "Street" intake assembly (see dyno graph below). Since this intake is designed for maximum airflow, it requires custom computer programming. If you are looking for an intake that does not require tuning, then we recommend that you look at our "Street" intake assembly, as it will allow you to upgrade your intake both with or without a computer re-flash.

Flow testing the C&L "Racer" intake assembly on our computerized flowbench
When we first introduced our "Street/Strip" system to the public in December of 2004, just 2 short months after the release of the 2005 Mustang, we established ourselves as the first company to offer a complete air intake solution for these new vehicles. Through our exhaustive testing, we identified the need for a convenient tuning solution and worked closely with Diablosport until a proven and truly plug-and-play system became available. By February, we began selling our complete C&L "Street/Strip" air intake assembly with full tuning support so that the end user did not have to rely on a custom tune shop to accommodate the computer adjustments that are required when installing a larger air intake assembly on the new model Mustang vehicles. The "Street/Strip" package has proven to be one of the more popular upgrades for the new Mustang GT vehicles, and is consistently ranked among the very best in power production and product quality.

Knowing that a good number of people are attracted to the appearance of a large diameter intake assembly that features a plastic inlet tube, we decided to offer a new version of our existing kit to meet these requirements. This new "Racer" inlet assembly gets it's name due to it's larger internal 95mm diameter and it's lighter overall weight, which is accomplished through the plastic inlet tube and a thinner bodied CNC machined aluminum mass airflow housing. This lighter weight eliminates the need for a mounting bracket to support the mass airflow end of the inlet tube, as the complete assembly is adequately supported by the throttle body silicone hose mounting and the filter shroud assembly, which keeps the air filter separated from the engine compartment heat. In keeping with the "Racer" theme, this package is offered at a lower price than the original "Street/Strip" system. This new intake is ideal for those who are going for the "racer" look and are looking to squeeze every last horsepower out of a highly modified naturally aspirated 3 valve GT Mustang. Nitrous users should use our "Street/Strip" system, as the cast aluminum inlet pipe is ideal for nitrous plumbing, which is capable of withstanding the extreme forces of the occasional nitrous backfire that would normally shred most rubber or plastic plumbing.

Although the "Racer" system is larger than our original "Street" air intake and has greater flow capacity, testing has shown that performance is basically the same between the two. Only heavily modified Mustangs will generate more horsepower with the "Racer" intake assembly, and there is certainly no "downside" to using the "Racer" intake assembly in mild or stock applications (see dyno chart on left). It is our opinion that our original kit is of the ideal size for most people, and only those with more substantial modifications (such as ported heads and cams) will be able to find greater performance afforded by the larger "Racer" package. The dyno test seen on the left was performed by us on a totally stock manual transmission equipped 2005 Mustang GT during our calibration testing for the new "Racer" intake assembly. In addition to a stock baseline, you will also notice that we tested our original street/strip system to see how they compare to each other. Although the "Racer" system made anywhere from 1 to 1.27 more HP in the upper RPM's at peak, you will notice that the performance between the two systems was very similar throughout the entire RPM range, with the orignal "street/strip" kit making slightly more power throughout the midrange from 3,300 to 5,200 RPM. The performance was so similar that one would be hard pressed to be able to declare a clear winner in terms of overall performance.

We are often asked by customers "Which is best, the "Street" or "Racer" system?". The answer is that they are both comparable in performance in most applications, and it is totally up to the preferences of the end user. Both systems flow more than 1,000 CFM, and will support a substantial level of horsepower. With the use of the "no tune option", the "Street" kit gives the customer the flexibility of using the intake both with and without the need of a computer re-flash. The "Racer" intake flows 7% more, is lighter in weight, but it REQUIRES computer programming due to it's large size. We recommend that you chose the system that appeals to your personal taste and requirements given these facts.
